Top 10 Pressure side pool cleaner Reviews / updated June 2020
1) Polaris Vac-Sweep 360
Pros of the Polaris vac-sweep 360: The tail brush stirs the water around which helps with the removing of algae.
As the backup valve pulls it back out whenever it gets stuck so it does not hangup a lot.
It cleans the shallow end as well as the deeper part of your pool.
Cons of the Polaris vac-sweep 360: In the end a cleaner with a booster pump seems to give more power, which makes it easier to climb walls and clean stairs. That does mean you need an extra expensive item (the booster) in your pool which needs maintenance and energy. and replacement in the end. If you compare the quality against the price the Polaris vac-sweep 360 makes a good buy.
2) Polaris Vac-Sweep 280
The Polaris vac-sweep works in all inground pool cleaners. Like most Polaris pool cleaners it needs a booster pump to propel itself through the pool. In my opinion one step up from the best seller, because of it’s power.
3) Polaris Vac-Sweep 380
The Polaris vac sweep 380 also needs a booster pump to function. It is one step stronger so all things are just a little bit more. One more wheel, little bigger bag, better gears. This is nice if you own a large pool but if not you will not need this. And as it has one more of everything this also wears out and gives extra maintenance costs.
4) Pentair LL505G Kreepy Krauly Legend
The Kreepy Krauly Legend is a pressure side cleaner which uses a booster pump. The Legend II is the non-booster Legend. See further down below. Comparable pool cleaners are the Polaris 280 and their own Pentair 360028.
Pros of the Kreepy Krauly Legend: Cleaning goes fast, unfasten the clip style bag, dump the debris out the bag and flush the finer grit with a hose. As it has 4 wheels it doesn’t tip over like some 3 wheel cleaners do.
Cons of the Pentair LL505G Legend: There comes a very long hose with this unit. Some of you will need to cut it to fit your pool. Instructions for this are included though. With some people/pools the hose tangles up and the cleaner circles through the pool. Why this happens is not known.
5) Polaris Vac-Sweep 3900 Sport
Okay, if have read a lot of reviews over the years on the Polaris Vac-sweep 3900 and…
I honestly still don’t know why people buy this one.
There are so many bad reviews online with warnings of costly reparations that I never advise this one.
It really surprises me that it is still in the bestsellers list.
– Updated – This product has been updated to the polaris 9350/ 9450 / 9550. – #ad For reviews see here!
6) Zodiac 6-120-00 Polaris Vac-Sweep 165
Pros of the Polaris Vac-Sweep 165: It takes some time to adjust the hoses to the right length but then it does cover the whole pool. The Polaris 165 can stay in the water 24/7 and improves the circulation of the water. According to the many reviews online it seems to do its job well.
Cons of the Polaris Vac-Sweep 165: There are a lot of complains about how long the pool cleaner lasts. It seems to work wel the first season and then you will need to replace the hose and somehow it never works as well as before.
7) Pentair 360028 Kreepy Krauly Racer
This pressure cleaner is one step up of the legend. Polaris is the brand name for pressure side cleaners but Pentair’s Racer is a good attempt to cut into this market. The Kreepy Krauly Racer is good. It requires a booster pump. Main competitor: Maybe the Polaris 3900 ?
Pros of the Kreepy Krauly Racer: It has a large debris opening and a large debris bag. You can adjust the outward pressure so the machine does not climb your walls and goes slower. Like the Kreepy Krauly legend this racer also has 4 wheels to prevent it from tipping over easily. The filter bag has a flotation device in it so all debris goes to the top and it makes sure the cleaners stability is better.
Cons Pentair 360028 Racer: The racer can get stuck on subtle angles between shallow and deep ends of your pool when the bag needs emptying. It does seem to unstuck itself though. Some people seem to have problems with leakage of the wall connector.
8) Pentair LX5000G Kreepy Krauly Legend II Pressure Pool Cleaner
This Kreepy Krauly Legend II is the non booster pump version of the Kreepy Krauly Legend. It works with your primary pool pump. This saves on energy and on booster price and maintenance. But it makes the cleaner a bit more expensive as it needs to produce more power itself. Compares to: the Polaris 280 or different models but with installing a booster pump.
Pros of the Kreepy Krauly Legend II: This cleaner saves energy and money as you don’t need a booster pump. It has a backup cycle of around the 3 minutes so when it runs into something it stays there for a while and then returns. (a bit long though). The cleaner has a good “solid made” feeling to it.
Cons of the Kreepy Krauly Legend II: It is not as good in picking up leaves as it’s brothers the Legend and the Racer. But perhaps that is not a fair comparison as those 2 both use a booster. You can’t use a yet stream of the cleaner to clean out the velcro bag so you will have to clean it by hand or need a hose.
9) Zodiac F5B Polaris Vac-Sweep 280 Black Max
The Polaris Vac-sweep 280 is the black the black version of the white/blue Polaris Vac-Sweep 280. Except for the color there are no differences, so it is not stronger or better then the white one. For those who asked themselves: according to other users it should not leave skid marks so it can be used on lighter colored pools. And the hose is also black. The difference between the F1 and the F5 is in the need for a booster pump. The F1 is a non-booster cleaner and the F5b cleaners do require a booster pump.
10) Pentair GW7900 Kreepy Krauly SandShark
The 2 most sold Above ground pressure side pool cleaners:
Polaris Vac-Sweep 65
Pros of the Polaris vac-sweep 65: It is an “easy to install” pool cleaner if you read the manual. The 65 is very quiet. The bag is easy to clean.
Cons of the Polaris vac-sweep 65: it does not work with the Intex pump as that pump doesn’t have enough power to move the Polaris 65 through the water. The discharge fitting on the side wall of an Intex pool is also not compatible. So this cleaner is not suitable for a very often used above ground pool. A good alternative for the Intex pool owners would be the Aquabot Rover Junior.
Zodiac Polaris Turbo Turtle
The Polaris turbo turtle is an above ground cleaner which drags a bag across the bottom of the pool to sweep the dirt in and it uses a jet system to blast the dirt of the wall. It works with the normal pool circulation system of most above ground swimming pools.
Pros of the Polaris Turbo Turtle: The turbo turtle is a really cute decoration of your swimming pool for kids 😉 Once you set it to the right adjustments for your pool it does not need a lot of maintenance. Sturdy little pool cleaner.
Cons of the Polaris Turbo Turtle: It seems difficult to get the right setup. The turbo turtle is not compatible with Intex above ground pools. This is because the standard Intex pool pumps don’t have enough power to propel it. A good alternative for the Intex pool owners would be the Aquabot Rover Junior.
Pressure side pool cleaner explanation & Features
Disadvantages: The pressure pool cleaners (pressure driven pool cleaners) use the water flow of the pool pump returning into the pool to clean the pool. This works as the flow forces the cleaner forward so it can stream water and dirt through a filter bag. This process does require high amounts of water pressure to keep the cleaner working. This is why often the use of a dedicated booster pump is advised to provide additional water pressure. And also why often the ones with a booster pump work better then the ones without a booster. In total this makes the system more expensive as you need to buy the booster and it which then also needs extra energy and extra maintenance.
Advantages: But it does also have its advantages mainly because there is more power so it will often clean better than the non booster cleaners. Also as those pressure side pool cleaners are “set and forget”type cleaners, you don’t have to take them out when you go for a swim although it is advised with most pool cleaners. If you take for example the robotic pool cleaners, they require electricity to get the robot going so you need to take those heavy things out when you like to swim as you can’t swim with electrical appliances in the same water. This makes it more of clean on-pool cleaner. Compared to suction side cleaners these don’t use the pools own filtration system so you can still use that.
If you already have everything installed in your pool for a booster and a pressure side pool cleaner this is a good option.
